WTF Just Happened?!

President Trump just threatened to unleash the Insurrection Act (again!) in Minnesota! Why? Because protests erupted after ICE agents shot two people, one fatally. Seriously, federal military in the streets over protests? Are we living in a movie?

Okay, so first, an ICE agent shoots and kills Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis. Then, another ICE agent shoots a Venezuelan immigrant in the leg during an attempted arrest. Cue nationwide protests against ICE, especially in Minnesota.

And what does President Trump do? He takes to Truth Social, ranting about "corrupt politicians" and "professional agitators" attacking "Patriots of I.C.E." He then flat-out says he'll "institute the INSURRECTION ACT" to "quickly put an end to the travesty." Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison immediately pushed back, calling Trump’s actions the cause of the protests and vowing to challenge the Insurrection Act in court. So, this is how we got here: a social media threat to federalize military force?

Are We Serious Right Now?

Seriously, right now? The Insurrection Act, which hasn't been used in over three decades, is on the table?! President Trump is out here claiming nearly half of all US presidents used it, and one president invoked it 28 times. Spoiler alert: he's wrong. The Brennan Center for Justice says only 17 out of 45 presidents (about 37%) have used it, and no one more than six times! Not 28, people!

This law essentially lets the President send troops to states, even without state consent, to act as police — making arrests and conducting searches. Remember the 1992 LA riots? Marines were deployed under this very act, and there was an infamous moment where they almost opened fire on police officers due to miscommunication.
